Nothing ‘virtual’ about Wii boxing workout
Cleveland State University researchers have just wrapped up a study which yielded some surprising results.
“We all sat there for a second like, ‘Really?’” exercise major Kristen Persuk told the Plain Dealer Reporter, “It was actually quite shocking.”
A group of 29 test subjects were instructed to spend 30 minutes playing Wii boxing and 30 minutes pounding an actual boxing bag. Participants were hooked to an oxygen analyzer, heart monitor and pedometer which fed data into a computer where their calorie burns were calculated. And the results?
The difference in calories burned between the two activities was not statistically significant. Specifically, women burned an average of 15 more calories on the boxing bag while men burned 39 more.
The lack of resistance in Wii boxing makes the game ideal for low-impact exercise. “That’s a great thing,” CSU Associate Professor Ken Sparks said. “One reason people don’t exercise is because they feel like it is too strenuous. With the Wii, they get the workout, but there isn’t that negative feeling.”
